What Actually Happens in the Modern Men’s Group

By: Demet Çek, Ph.D. | March 27, 2026

If you’ve ever thought about joining a men’s group but hesitated because you weren’t quite sure what to expect, you are definitely not alone. Most men feel the same way before their first meeting. The idea of sitting with other guys and talking about thoughts and feelings can sound awkward, uncomfortable, or just… unclear.

You might be wondering: What do we actually talk about? How much do I have to share? Is this going to feel forced or intense? These are all valid questions deserving of answers. This article will discuss what actually happens in the Modern Men’s Group so you can decide if it might be a good fit for you.

What It’s Not

Let’s start by clearing up a few common misconceptions about group:

  • It’s not a free-for-all venting session: Each meeting has a structure, guidance, and purpose. Every group focuses on a different core men’s mental health topic such as effective communication, successful friendships, mental resilience, or true intimacy. These topics are paired with action-oriented discussions, and group members work toward values-based goals throughout the series. The curriculum is regularly updated to reflect current trends, research, and relevant developments in men’s mental health. You’ll also receive group notes before each session and follow-up resources as well as weekly assignments to help you apply what you’re learning.
  • It’s not confrontational: There are no dramatic “interventions” or uncomfortable callouts like you might see on television. You won’t be put on the spot. Instead, there is a level of personal accountability as you work toward your goals. The group is designed to be a safe, supportive space where curiosity, understanding, and connection always come before challenge. And at the same time, you are encouraged, supported and feel motivated by other group members along the way.
  • You don’t have to share everything: There is no pressure to reveal more than what you’re ready for. That said, most men are surprised by how much they open up once they feel comfortable in the group.

What a Typical Session Looks Like

While each meeting is unique, most follow a consistent and approachable structure. Here is a general sense of how a typical meeting flows:

  • Check-In: We start with a brief check-in about what’s on your mind or a quote to spark reflection.
  • Skill or Topic Focus: Each meeting introduces a topic or skill, such as expressing emotions, building stronger relationships, assertive communication, and navigating physical intimacy. You’ll learn practical tools based in evidence-based approaches like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy.
  • Group Discussion: This is where the real value of group therapy shows up. Members share their experiences related to the topic, ask questions, offer support, and learn from each other. It’s common to hear someone describe a situation that sounds very familiar. Or, you have the chance to offer a perspective that helps someone else. There is something powerful about realizing that you’re not the only one dealing with something and that you are in it together.
  • Closing: Each meeting wraps up with a brief reflection or an intention for the week ahead, helping carry forward what was learned into daily life.

What Do Men Actually Talk About?

The topics are more relatable than you might expect:

  • Stress from work, family, or life transitions
  • Relationship challenges with partners, kids, parents, or friends
  • Difficulty expressing emotions or asking for help
  • Feeling disconnected, stuck, or uncertain about direction
  • Navigating identity, purpose, or “what’s next?”
  • Managing anger, frustration, or anxiety

These are the real experiences that most men face but rarely talk about because they don’t have a space to talk about them openly.

Why Men’s Groups Work

Group therapy can be especially helpful for the following reasons:

  • You realize you are not alone. One of the most common things men say after joining a group is “I thought I was the only one who felt this way.” There is power in validating men’s experiences and struggles.
  • You learn from others. Hearing how someone else handles a challenge can teach more than any book. You’ll gain perspectives you never would have considered on your own.
  • You build connection. Many men don’t have spaces for meaningful conversations with other men. This group provides a place for honest, real conversations where you feel heard and know you’re supported.
  • You practice new skills in real time. Instead of learning about communication or emotional expression, you’ll actively practice it during the group meeting, with feedback and support.
  • Accountability creates momentum. Showing up each week, setting goals, and checking in with others helps you stay consistent and make progress while sharing the journey with others alongside you.
