Michael Toohey, Psy.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist in California offering professional therapy services for adults, couples, and adolescents who are in need of additional support or the development of coping skills to manage life’s most difficult moments. Dr. Toohey provides care in both group and one-on-one formats. He utilizes cognitive behavioral strategies to teach clients techniques to manage and reduce their symptoms, as well as drawing from Psychodynamic and Feminist theory for more in-depth work. Dr. Toohey is collaborative, dynamic, humorous, interactive, client and solution-focused. He provides support and practical feedback in an empathic and compassionate manner to help his clients feel safe and comfortable to effectively communicate and address their concerns.
Areas of Specialization
Dr. Toohey has worked with the LGBTQ+ community for over 25 years, both as a clinician and volunteer in San Francisco and North Dakota. He is a co-founder of Minot, North Dakota’s first LGBTQ+ Pride organization. He has worked extensively with transgender youth and their families to help the individual and their loved ones navigate all aspects of the transitioning process.
Dr. Toohey is proud to have served the Air Force active duty service members and dependents in North Dakota and the Navy active duty service members at the 32nd/Dry Side clinic here in San Diego. He has extensive training and experience treating PTSD and sleep disorders as well as addressing concerns related to work stress, and family deployment and reintegration. Dr. Toohey considers it both an honor and a privilege to serve those who serve our country.
Dr. Toohey specializes in trauma, childhood abuse, substance abuse, as well as depression, anxiety, and nightmares. He also specializes in transgender adolescents and their families, as well as intimacy and relationship-related matters for gay men. He has treated individuals with sexual concerns for over 15 years, ranging from sexual identity and expression to internalized homophobia, as well as ED and sexual compatibility in both same sex and opposite sex couples.
